Dear writers,

Here are your basic guidelines:

Prose Submissions: There is no upward word limit for prose submissions, but we will only consider one prose submission from you at a time. We only accept typed and double-spaced prose submissions.

Poetry Submissions: We will consider submissions of one to ten poems contained within a single document. We are currently very, very weary of poetry about birds or involving bird imagery, but if you think you can make it work, we encourage you to show us how wrong we are.

We also accept web content—poems and prose. See guidelines for these below.

We accept simultaneous submissions, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. We do not accept previously published material. We can pay you only in contributor copies and a promise to hang out with you if you ever visit Portland.

We consider submissions only through Submishmash, because in our opinion this only makes things easier for everyone (even though we miss manila envelopes and stamps).

Now get off the internet and go back to work.

All best,

Sarah Marshall

Online Poetry

Poetry submitted in this category will be considered for our online poetry journal, located at portlandreview.tumblr.com, which is refreshed each and every day with a new poem. Please include in your cover letter your author bio as you'd like to see it appear alongside your poem. If you like, you may also submit any visual art you'd like to accompany your work (provided you can either attribute it or provide a link to its original source).

Humor/Web content

Theportlandreview.com is currently seeking humor pieces for publication. We're looking for snide, cynical prose of about 500-1,000 words on a variety of topics. The sky is the limit, as they say.

Here are some topic we're currently looking for pieces on:

1) Defend a movie that has been critically panned, for example; tell us why Sinbad's Houseguest is an awesome movie.

2) Tell us why a critically acclaimed film is awful, for example; tell us why Citizen Kane is a pretentious glob of goo.

3) Write about your favorite episode of ER. (Seriously).

4) Tell us about a piece of pop culture (an album, a TV show, lawn darts, whatever) that has a significant emotional resonance to you. But be funny about it.

5) Anything funny.

Keeping with our upcoming fall film & video issue, we're especially looking for pieces relevant to the issue theme. Any pieces received by August 31st will also be considered for the print issue.
